Calves, six years later

by Tulasi-Priya on Friday 23 December 2011

The calves today, in case you were reconsidering them as Hanukkah/Christmas gifts.

Out of town guests coming, so that’s all for today. I hope everyone’s holiday is joyous.

Still with the beautiful eyes . . . but perhaps a little more difficult to keep in the suburbs. Oh, well.

Happy Merry, Tulasi-Priya!

Yes, the neighbors might object.

I’m really so glad to see you writing, Tulasi-Priya. Your blog is one of my favorite Christmas presents this year. Have a wonderful holiday!

Now I’m feeling guilty.

Auggie! You came to see me! Guilty ’bout what, burgers?

Not responding to your email faster. There is nothing I cannot feel guilty about.

Nothing to feel guilty about. You’ve got a life, and I’m not the most important part of it. I was just trying to make sure I heard from you timely, that’s all. The squeaky wheel, etc.

If it means I have to use a switch like the one in your friend’s hand, no thank you. I’m already traumatized by Averil’s comment over at Betsy’s.

Happy Holidays, TP. It’s so wonderful getting to know you.

Relax, MSB, the switch is for communicating, not beating. Oxen respond to voice commands, but occasionally need a physical reminder when they get distracted. I could hit you as hard as Madhu usually hits the oxen and elicit only a faint “ouch” for my efforts. Those guys have an all-leather exterior, and no Hare Krishna worthy of the name would ever do anything to harm a cow. That said, I’ve had couple of friends get angry and smack a mischievous cow, and the cow just rolls her eyes, like, “was that you, or a mosquito?” Cows are a lot smarter than they look. They are not servile and blindly loyal like dogs, but they do form a bond with the herdsman. Bulls/oxen like to work, and they like human beings. It’s a much more complex relationship, a partnership, at least as much as any human can have with an animal. In India, I walked alongside uncastrated bulls (giving them plenty of space—those horns!), and never had a problem, which is not to say it doesn’t happen. Hm…maybe I’ll write more about this: “Close EnCOWnters”
